Setting the Table – Seer

“They will come from east and west, from north and south, and recline at the table in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 13:29)

Garlic is one of those ingredients that nutritionists love. Not only does it add flavor to just about any dish, garlic also contains many health benefits. These benefits can range from improving iron consumption and fighting infections to helping control blood pressure. Some advocates even claim that consuming garlic regularly reduces one’s risk of getting prostate cancer. Considering all these possible benefits, it is no surprise that Persians chose garlic, or seer (سیر), as their Haft Seen symbol for medicine, health, and wellness.

As helpful as garlic is to our health, it fails in comparison to God’s healing ability. The Psalmist worships the Lord with this statement, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases…” (Psalm 103:2-3) The Lord’s healing power is all encompassing. He heals us physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, and He even restores relationships.

Today’s prayer is simple: that Persians would encounter the Great Healer.

Almighty God, you are more powerful than we can fathom; your ability to heal is unlimited. Thank you for your authority over disease and sickness. Lord, we pray that Iranians would experience your healing power in their lives. Answer their prayers and reveal yourself to them miraculously. Use this Nowruz as an opportunity to demonstrate your divine authority and power in undeniable ways.
